I wonder what elevation that peak is...
Being a web developer by trade, I spend inordinate amounts of time using Google to surf the net. Imagine my surprise when yesterday I found that Google gives you the elevation of a peak when you submit a query: type “elevation rainier” or “elevation shasta”. I knew Google did tricks like this for a variety of things (for example: “quarts in a gallon”), but the elevation one was new to me.
Not one to waste key strokes (but one to waste time on stupid computer tricks), I thought it prudent to create a nifty Firefox quick search using this new found knowledge. Now, all I have to do is type “elevation aconcagua” into the address bar and viola, I know the elevation of Mount Aconcagua. I know you are chomping at the bit to do the same, so here are instructions to set this pointless little thing up in Firefox (you are using Firefox aren’t you?):
- From bookmarks, select manage bookmarks
- Choose new bookmark
- Enter in a name of your preference
- Enter http://www.google.com/search?q=elevation%20%s
&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial for location - Enter elevation for keyword
- Click ok
- Go to your address/location bar (or type ctrl + L) and enter elevation rainier
There you have it, with a an internet connection and only a couple keystrokes you can find out the elevation of a peak.
