Chinook Pass
Jun 12, 2004After some initial confusion I made my way to Maria's house at 7:45am and meet up with Tim. It had been raining in Seattle, but the weather looked better here, with partly cloudy skies. But on the drive to Chinook the rain started again and I resigned myself to a day of quick skis from the car and wet clothes.
As we came over the crest of Chinook Pass, the skies cleared again and I realized that we might actually get some decent weather. Tim parked the truck and we threw on our skins and skis and started ascending to Naches Peak. We weren't really sure where we wanted to go, as this was our first time skiing here. We followed a skin track and made our way around Naches peak, where we spotted a nice corniced bowl of the side of Naches Peak, perfect for a warm up run.
After we made our first descent, we stated skinning back towards the truck with the plan of skinning up underneath a rock face below Naches Peak. From there, we wanted to ski down the valley, where we would re-skin and then either head back to the truck or go for another lap.
I was having a little difficulty keeping my skins on the snow as we made our ascent, and slipped a couple of times on my way up. We got most of the way up the bowl and when we de-skinned, Tim noticed the bar on his Fritschi Bindings had broken. We decided to ski back to the car and the turns we got in the top bowl were really nice. Back at the truck, we drank a couple of beers and enjoyed the sun.
