Trip Report
We meet in Bellevue at the crack of dawn; 4am to be precise. On the drive in, I caught some sleep, until we hit the 20-mile washboard road to the trailhead. Shortly after 7am, we were on the trail, eager to get some turns. With a steady march, we reached Spray park and consulted the map. There was nary a drop of snow in sight and we realized that we still had quite a ways to go until we could put on our skins.
We hiked, and then hiked some more and finally came to a promising patch of snow. I booted up the snow and over the ridge, while Tim and Kenny opted to stay on the rocks. We had finally reached continuous snow and we all let out a sigh of relief. It was a longer hike than we had planned, but we were there. We skinned up Flett glacier and near the top, decided to mossy on over to Russell Glacier for some extra altitude. Russell had some large crevasses opening, although there was still plenty of unscarred snow for a descent. We headed towards the skier’s right ridge and stopped a little shy of 9,000ft. We grabbed some food and took in the views; Mowich Glacier was very impressive.
The ski down Russell was nice, and we got some good turns. The snow hadn’t really formed any sun cups and the surface was pretty smooth. Flett was the same, although towards the bottom the snow got a little heavy. Once off the snow, we packed up our gear and began the long hike down to the parking lot.
