It had been almost a week since the last snowfall and the sun and wind had conspired to make the ski conditions less than ideal. But Tim, Dale and I decided to hit the powder stash in hopes of finding some good turns. Skiing through the trees was decent, however there was only about six inches of snow on top of a solid crust.

Once we got into the slide path, we noticed the quality of snow drastically improve. We decided to skin up the path towards the top ridge of Kendall. A couple hundred feet below the ridge, we stopped skinning, staked out a spot and took in the sun. The ski down was fantastic, with over a foot of light snow covering the crust. The cold temperatures had sucked out all the moisture and the trees had provided enough shade to hold the sun’s damaging rays at bay.

At the bottom, we made our way above the cliffs and found a steep tree-covered slope to ski down. Conditions were similar to our other ski through the trees, and at the bottom of Commonwealth Basin we re-skinned and blazed a trail out. Eventually, we took off our skins and had a nice mellow ski through the trees, ending up at the ski sloe above Sahale Lodge on Alpental Road.
