Tatoosh

Jan 3, 2005

After an amzing day at Baker, we decided to take it easy and head to the Tatoosh for the day. We arrived in the parking lot around 9:30am and made the treacherous skin up to the road. It was another cold and clear day and we didn’t expect to get a whole lot of skiing in. More a day to explore and just get out.

After skinning along the road, we made our way up the mountain, following a pre-existing skin track. The track headed looker’s left of where we normally go, but we decided to follow it anyways. Like I said, a day of exploration…

I mentioned to Trevor how Gunjan had criticized his photos of me, so the first open swath of powder we came to, Trevor insisted I get a quick ski in so he could snap a picture. After that, we crossed over a nice looking chute, but the wind had put a layer of crust on the snow and we were not sure how stable it was. We continued into an open bowl and decided to dig a pit to test the stability. It looked fairly stable, although there was a weak layer in between two layers of ice.

We headed back to the open area where I snagged a couple of turns and made a short but very nice descent down the relatively steep slope. After grabbing a quick bite to eat, we headed back down to the road and back to the car.
