Blackcomb Mountain at Whistler
Jan 13, 2006Tyson convinced me to roll up to Whistler for the long weekend. We arrived on Friday night and after a couple of beers decided to get a good night’s sleep; there was copious amounts of powder to pillage in the morning. We got a somewhat late start, as we figured it would take awhile to open the upper mountain. Some good turns were had off Jersey Cream Express, although it wasn’t much vertical. People were lining up for Glacier Express, but we decided to hit Jersey a couple more times before getting in line at Glacier. A liftie came through and said it was going to be an hour before Glacier Express opened, so we skied down to Crystal Chair and found a gynormous line. Once on the chair, we noticed that Glacier was moving people up the mountain. Our frustration level was a bit high, as we had not experienced that one great run we were itching for.
At the top of Glacier Express, there was about 50 people waiting in line to get into Spanky’s Ladder. We were torn; should we wait in line for an unknown amount of time or go ski tracked runs and hope to be near the top when Spanky’s opened. We opted to wait and after 15 minutes, they opened the gate and we were marching along like ants. Tyson lead the way down a shoot and it was fantastic. Spanky’s was not open the day before and there was over 40†of fresh to be had. The snow was relatively light, considering what we are used to and we ended up doing two more laps Spanky’s before retiring to our room to watch the Seahawks kick some ass.
