Cape Point
Jan 5, 2007
Gunjan and I did a packaged day tour to Cape Point and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We were picked up at 8am from our hostel and after making the rounds through Cape Town picking everyone else up, we stopped at our first destination, Kalk Bay. Some people opted to take a boat ride to see the seals, but we didn't bother - I can walk a half a mile to the Ballard Locks and see seals in Seattle.
We continued along the coast until stopping to see the penguins in Simons Town. It was kind of touristy, but it was cool to see them. Then it was off to Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, where we took a short bike ride. While getting the bikes ready, we snapped pictures of a Baboon who seemed to be posing for us on a rock. After a couple of minutes, he jumped off the rock, walked around us and snatched a girl's bag from the ground and ran off into the brush! She had her passport, money and a lot of other stuff in there, and our guide had to run after the Baboon. The Baboon went through girls bag, pulling out everything and eating some vitamins, but finally left the bag. Beware of the Baboons….
After lunch, we were off to the Cape of Good Hope, for a hike up to the light house and then down to the ocean. The landscape and views are absolutely amazing, with huge cliffs overlooking the ocean and white sand beaches. We got to see a couple of rock dassies, which are similar to ground-hogs and supposedly related to elephants.
