Giant Mountain
Jun 21, 2006
I went back to the East Coast for my Grandmother's 85 birthday in Connecticut. Afterwards, my brother and I went up to Vermont to stay with my parents in their new house they just built. It is nice to have them back in Vermont, although when they were living in Europe it meant at least one trip to Europe every year!
They have some great views of the Adirondacks from their porch, and we decided to do a hike up Giant Mountain. We got a fairly early start, and after an hour drive, we reached the trail head. We loaded up on mosquito repellant, but quickly found out that the squitos were not that bad. The trail had a fairly sustained elevation grade, and we moved right along, trying not to slip on the occasional wet rock faces. After four hours, we reached the top and enjoyed sweeping views of the Adirondacks and obscured views of Lake Champlain.
On the hike down, we took an alternate route that ended up putting us about one mile north from where we parked the car, requiring a hike along the road. My brother and I took a five minute detour on the way down and came out on top of a large waterfall. Had we had more time, I would have liked to see the falls from the base, as it was quite impressive.
